Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is a haemic enzyme present in important amounts (± 5% of weight) in the primary granules of neutrophil polymorphonuclear leucocytes. Together with its peroxidasic activity, MPO has a chlorination activity, producing hypochlorous acid from hydrogen peroxide and chlorideanions, which is a strong oxidant, able to chlorinate biomolecules. In phagolysosomes, MPO exerts as a strong bactericidal activity. But, high concentrations of MPO in plasma, biological fluids and tissues are markers of an important or excessive activation of neutrophils. MPO enzymatic acitvity measurement in plasma is difficult by the presence of albumin; an immunological technique is thus needed to evaluate the total amounts of released MPO.
