Ann. Méd. Vét., 2002, 146 (3), pp 155 - 160 Vaccination as a tool to control foot-and-mouth disease.DE CLERCQ K.Abstract :
For the control of foot-and-mouth disease most European countries will move toward a non- vaccination strategy supplemented with emergency vaccination. This emergency vaccination can be done as a ring vaccination or as a suppressive vaccination for damping down the virus excretion. Several different sort of vaccines (based on proteins, peptides, DNA) were developed but only the conventional vaccine has proven to be effective in the field. It will be crucial to differentiate without delay between antibodies from a vaccination and from infection. When an outbreak occurs and emergency vaccination is applied, the waiting period to regain the "FMD free" status is 6 months if a serosurvey based on the detection of antibodies to non structural proteins demonstrates the absence of infection in the vaccinated population. If a change to a prophylactic routine vaccination policy is considered then is has to be taken into account that foot-and-mouth disease virus has 7 serotypes with each many subtypes and that airplanes and boats can bring far-away subtypes into the country.
