Given the enthusiasm arisen by reactive oxygen species among pathologists and clinicians, this synthesis reminds the chemical nature and the reactivity of oxygen. Generation of reactive nitrogen and oxygen species, their production in vivo and their physiological and toxic effects are explained emphasizing a recent aspect: their role in cell signaling and apoptosis.
