Abstract: Dermatophytosis is an unfrequent infection of the skin caused by fungi of the genera Microsporum and Trichophyton and is contagious and zoonotic. Clinical signs are highly variable. So, dermatophytosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of many skin conditions and should be confirmed or ruled out using four complementary aids : Woods lamp examination, direct examination of hair and scales, histopathological examination and fungal culture. The identification of the causal organism, based on the macroscopic and microscopic aspects of the fungal colonies, is mandatory. The treatment must be monitored methodically and includes clipping the coat, topical and systemic antifungal therapies and environmental treatment. Ideally, all in-contact animals should be treated until fungal cultures, carried out monthly, are negative. To date, vaccination needs further studies.
