Ann. Méd. Vét., 2014, 158 (2), pp 126-136 Comparison of the effect
of ultrasound guidance on
cerebrospinal fluid punctures
between cisternal and lumbar
locations in the dog:
an ex-vivo studyETIENNE A.-L., PEETERS D., BUSONI V.Abstract :
The ultrasound-guided needle placements
for cisternal and lumbar
canine puncture have been described.
The aim of this work was
to compare the effect of ultrasound
guidance for cerebrospinal
fluid puncture between cisternal
and lumbar locations.
Eighty-three operators participated
to the study. They were
classified in 4 groups based on
their experience. Each operator
had a short theoretical teaching
about each technique and
then performed the blind and the
ultrasound-guided cisternal and
lumbar punctures on randomized
cadavers. The lumbar ultrasound
guidance was direct while the
cisternal was indirect. After the
procedures volunteers filled-in a
questionnaire about their previous
experience, their performance and
their self-confidence.
Ultrasound-guidance increased
significantly the total success
rate of the puncture (compared
to the blind technique) but more
clearly with the lumbar location.
Cisternal ultrasound guidance
improved significantly the number
of attempts, time and selfconfidence
in inexperienced and
experienced operators. The first
mentioned cause of failure was
different according to location
and was related to the nature of
guidance.
This study demonstrates that inexperienced
operators were able to
realize ultrasound-guided puncture
after a short theoretical teaching
and this supports the use of
ultrasound-guidance for learning
purposes. Get the PDF Contact person : AL.Etienne@ulg.ac.be |
