Ann. Méd. Vét., 2014, 158 (2), pp 99-108 Toxicity to livestock and medicinal uses of Galega officinalis (Leguminosae)
and galegineFRAITURE A.Abstract :
The absorption of hay contaminated
by Galega officinalis has
killed 38 sheep in a Belgian farm.
The facts are briefly described.
This paper is mostly devoted to a
literature review about the active
substances discovered in the
plant. The focus is particularly put
on galegine and on its high toxicity
for sheep and, to a lesser extend,
for other animals (cows, goats,
horses…). Death can occur rapidly
by acute pulmonary oedema and
severe hydrothorax inducing acute
respiratory distress syndrome. The
plant has also medicinal properties
and was at the origin of the discovery
of metformin, a well known
antidiabetic. Other medicinal uses
of the plant are mentioned, as well
as its ability to increase lactation,
especially in cows. Finally, a summary
of the botanical aspects of
Galega officinalis, its ecology and
its invasive character is presented. Get the PDF Contact person : fraiture@br.fgov.be |
