Ann. Méd. Vét., 2011, 155 (2), pp 61-76 Cottonseed by-products on broilers productionDiaw M.T., Dieng A., Mergeai G., Hornick J.-L.Abstract :
Cottonseed by-products are
very high in nutrients and their
chemical composition varies
highly according to the varieties
of cotton and the various treatments
aiming at extracting oil.
Their use in animal nutrition, and
particularly in broilers, is especially
limited by the free gossypol
which can damage various
tissues and also decreases the
performances of growth and diet
efficiency. The incorporation of
cottonseed meal in broilers diet
may be increased following chemical
binding of free gossypol,
but these methods have drawbacks.
Ferrous sulfate denatures
feed and the use of lysine to bind
gossypol is limited by the expensiveness
of this product while the
biological fermentation is very
complex and inapplicable, as to
now, on a large way. Glandless
varieties could be incorporated
at a very high level in diets and
therefore could contribute to
decrease the protein feed requirements.
Unfortunately, agronomic
constraints associated to these
crops have limited the research in
this way. The production of varieties
in which gossypol secretion
would be inhibited before the
seed germination should alleviate
the limitations associated to cotton
by-products. Get the PDF Contact person : jlhornick@ulg.ac.be |
