Ann. Méd. Vét., 2011, 155 (1), pp 08-13 Efficacy of the metaflumizone-amitraz association in a case of canine
straelensiosis (Straelensia cynotis)FRANC A., MIGNON B.Abstract :
Straelensia cynotis is a mite close
to the family of Trombiculidae.
The life cycle remains largely
unknown. The larval stage that
was described in 2000 can be
responsible for a severe follicular
dermatitis that is mostly
observed in hunting dogs from
Southern Europe. The evolution
of the disease is usually
slow and acaricidal treatments
are most often disappointing. A
case of straelensiosis in a Jack
Russel terrier from the South of
France is reported, together with
a concise review of the relevant
literature. The dog presented
with a classical infestation characterized
by a sudden onset of
a multifocal, non-pruritic, painful
papulo-nodular dermatitis. His
general condition was unaffected.
The diagnosis was made
upon identification of parasitic
larval stages from S. cynotis in
hair follicles using deep skin
scrapings and histopathological
examination. A single application
of a combination of amitraz
and metaflumizone was followed
by a regression of the lesions
within two weeks and complete
healing three months thereafter.
The efficacy of the combination
metaflumizone-amitraz spot-on
formulation in both treatment
and prevention of canine straelensiosis
would need further
evaluation. Get the PDF Contact person : bmignon@ulg.ac.be |
