Ann. Méd. Vét., 2011, 155 (1), pp 01-07 Post-treatment monitoring in canine large intestinal tumors:
preliminary results of the intestinal occult blood detection applicationSAYAG D., JOLLY S., DESMECHT D.Abstract :
The canine large intestinal
tumors are rare diseases, affecting
one or more histological
layers of the large intestine.
The most frequently described
therapy approach is the surgical
excision of mass accompanied
by a treatment with COX-II
inhibitors in case of carcinoma.
Chemotherapy (vincristine,
cyclophosphamide, adriblatine)
for colorectal lymphoma is currently
available. A high rate of
recurrence was observed.
The occult intestinal blood
detection in stools is currently
the qualitative in vitro method
for the screening of colorectal
tumors in human medicine.
In this study, a commercial Gaiac
test (hemo FECŪ, Roche) was
evaluated in the post-treatment
monitoring of colorectal tumors
in dogs. A sensitivity of 100%
and a specificity of 97.44% were
obtained (58 results). The occult
intestinal blood detection using
a Gaiac test is inexpensive and
easy to access. This test shows
the effective presence of small
amounts of blood in stools,
major sign of recurrent colorectal
tumors. It can participate in
the post-treatment monitoring of
these diseases in dogs. Get the PDF Contact person : david.sayag@umontreal.ca |
