Ann. Méd. Vét., 2008, 152 (3), pp 180-190 Interest of troponin serin as maker of myocardial damage in veterinary medicineSANDERSEN C., REMY B., OLEJNIK D., AMORY H.Abstract :
The troponin complex is part of the structural proteins of different
striated muscles in the human or
animal body. It is built of three parts: the troponin I, T and C, of
which the isoforms of the T and the I troponin are distinct from their skeletal isoforms. In case of a myocardial damage, these proteins are liberated and gain access to the circulating blood from where they can be measured in a simple blood sample.
This technique is used routinely to detect the presence and estimate the severity of myocardial infarction in man. Recently, the measurement of circulating troponins has been proven to be useful in veterinary medicine,
especially for the detection of
myocardial damage in dogs and cats. Application of this technique has shown that myocardial damage can also be detected in other cardiac and non cardiac diseases in various animal species.
References values of cardiac troponin I have also been established for healthy horses and foals and an increase of
these values can be observed in horses after intense exercise and in foals with septicemia. In conclusion, measurement of cardiac tropinin I is an interesting maker of myocardial damage in veterinary medicine and further
studies should demonstrate its
usefulness in equine medicine. Get the PDF Contact person : charlotte.sandersen@ulg.ac.be |
