Ann. Méd. Vét., 2002, 146 (5), pp 261 - 276 For ever, marine mammals strandings have occurred on the coasts of Europe. Nevertheless, the increased interest for the protection and the conservation of those species, as well as their role as bioindicators of the marine environment justify systematic necropsies that are performed following standard procedures. The aim of this paper is to describe techniques for necropsies and tissue sampling for the most commonly stranded species on the coast-lines of the North Sea, the Channel, the French coast of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. In addition, the procedure provides techniques of field operations and stranding management, more specifically with regard to large cetaceans.JAUNIAUX T., GARCIA HARTMANN M., HAELTERS J., TAVERNIER J., COIGNOUL F.Abstract :
