Ann. Méd. Vét., 2009, 153 (4), pp 231-240 The Ardennaise hen : status of the breed and of its varietiesMOULA N., ANTOINE-MOUSSIAUX N., FARNIR F., LEROY P.Abstract :
The Ardennaise hen is a symbol of the Belgian avian biodiversity.
In the global context of urgent
conservation of local breeds of
domestic animals, this study is
concerned with the phenotypic diversity to be found in the various varieties of the Ardennaise, with particular emphasis on the evaluation of their growth and egg-laying performances. Efficient conservation strategies can take advantage of the economic interest in local breeds within the framework
of animal products differentiation.
From the twelve initially (see above) described varieties, only eight survive; they are all considered
here. A clear distinction between the coloured varieties of the Ardennaise and the white variety, on the basis of their weight performances, is drawn here.
Distinct approaches for the preservation
and the economic valorisation
of these varieties, taking their differences into account, are suggested. Get the PDF Contact person : Pascal.Leroy@ulg.ac.be |
